Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I AM?” (Matthew 16:13-18, emphasis added) He was revealing His true identity to His disciples, and then, after revealing His true identity, He revealed to Peter his true identity. (See also John 1:42. “Peter” means ‘the rock’.) This revealing of true identity was a pattern throughout all of Scripture. God reveals His true identity to His people, and then, through that revelation, reveals to those individuals their true identity. (For example, see the story of Jacob in Genesis 32:22-32.) God identifies Himself as “I AM” in Genesis 3:14-15. Then throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us as: “I AM Provider” (Genesis 22:14), “I AM Healer” (Exodus 15:26), “I AM Sanctifier” (Leviticus 20:8), “I AM Peace” (Judges 6:24), “I AM Righteousness” (Jeremiah 33:16), “I AM Shepherd” (Psalm 23:1), “I AM There” (Ezekiel 48:35), “I AM the Lord of Hosts” (Isaiah 1:24), “I AM the Bread of Life” (John 6:35), “I AM the Light of the World” (John 8:12), “I AM the Door” (John 10:7), “I AM the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11), “I AM the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25), “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6), “I AM the True Vine” (John 15:1). By coming to know the Great “I AM” you will come to know who you are – your true identity/purpose/destiny!
